Recently unearthed in the archives of Stalin’s secret police, the NKVD, Nina Lugovskaya’s diary offers rare insight into the life of a teenage girl in Stalin’s Russiawhen fear of arrest was a fact of daily life. Like Anne Frank, thirteen-year-old Nina is conscious of the extraordinary dangers around her and her family, yet she is preoccupied by ordinary teenage concerns: boys, parties, her appearance, who she wants to be when she grows up. As Nina records her most personal emotions and observations, her reflections shape a diary that is as much a portrait of her intense inner world as it is the Soviet outer one.Preserved here, these markingsthe evidence used to convict Nina as a counterrevolutionary”offer today’s reader a fascinating perspective on the era in which she lived.
Had to buy this book for school ~ can't believe there isn't an updated version of this book yet. Somehow we’ve got to begin to tell the world where it gets off”.
So, in the midst of their covert deeds and dangers, hours of strenuous work and urgency to save lives, here we have what is the very epitome of a saint the evocation of service Jesus refers to in his Olivet discourse who makes the time to read “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” (knowing the parish would disown her) and who tells her apparently “difficult” (prim) husband she “wants to discuss it with him” and heroically advocates “somehow we’ve got to begin to tell the world where it gets off”.
That is remarkable, and means more to me personally and emotionally, than all of the progressive (and excellent) UUA OWL (Our Whole Lives) sexuality education program. Von Dutch. The lessons are not belabored and they are well organized. Thank goodness.
