"Makes the reader feel the inspiration that comes from listening to a great mathematician." — Bulletin, American Mathematical Society
A distinguished mathematician and educator enlivens abstract discussions of arithmetic, algebra, and analysis by means of graphical and geometrically perceptive methods. His three-part treatment begins with topics associated with arithmetic, including calculating with natural numbers, the first extension of the notion of number, special properties of integers, and complex numbers. Algebra-related subjects constitute the second part, which examines real equations with real unknowns and equations in the field of complex quantities. The final part explores elements of analysis, with discussions of logarithmic and exponential functions, the goniometric functions, and infinitesimal calculus. 1932 edition. 125 figures.

Leroy's presence in the book and placed more of an emphasis on "his" presence than that of the co-editors.

It's no surprise this book is Alyson's bastard child not even their 'list of published works' will claim: even their cover choice is reticent.

If such a thing as a gutsy, audacious publishing house still exists, hear me out now:

This. It wasn't until I took a real analysis course in college and proved that the exponential function exp(x) is continuous at every real value of x (and indeed at every complex number of finite modulus as well) that I understood why 2^(sqrt 2) is well-defined.

How does Klein approach the problem? He asks the student to draw the hyperbola xy = 1 on the blackboard. The complexity presented through the argument of "the person versus the first-person narrative" is rife within this sublime collection. Still a good book.. The book was for a class I was taking in school. Things like propulsion systems, sustainable sou
