I was born in Bridgetown, Western Australia on 16th July 1952. My mum s Nana died in hospital the same day, just after hearing that I had been born. Mum is an Australian descended from the Scots, Cornish and Irish with names like Forrest, Roberts and O Shanahan. I am a seventh generation Australian. In 1955 my family moved to Oxford, in England to stay with my grandparents. My Grandfather worked for the Oxford University Press as a comptometer all of his life except for when he served in the Great War. He saw action in major campaigns and was wounded at the Somme. This injury left him with a noticeable limp. When he was in his mid-seventies it was decided that he should have a hip operation. He was otherwise perfectly healthy but he missed his Old-Time Dancing and was finding it more and more difficult to keep up his allotment, which he loved. In his younger days he, my Nan and my uncles performed in a Black and White Minstrel troop. My Gramp was the announcer, my Nan played the piano
There were even several topic areas that we didn't have time to spend on, like self-organizing lists, networks, self-balancing trees, data compression, and garbage collection.
I was tempted to only give 4 stars in this review because there are a painful number of typos/errors in this text. The plot is very original, and once you get past the boring parts, it is very fun to read. Mystery and magic are not only for the imagination. What I've noticed (which I didn't notice as a teenager because I didn't know better) is that Wick has a great plot - but doesn't write well. Inadequate bonding, neglect, abuse, aggression, anger and violence are some of the conditions we learn about, and the healing brought to bear.
