Caryl Phillips's first novel tells the story of Leila, a nineteen-year-old woman living on a small Caribbean island in the 1950s. Unsatisfied with life on the island, Leila decides to leave her friends and follow her mother overseas, taking her restless husband Michael and her young son with her. Her subsequent passage to England brings her face to face with the consequences of the decisions she has made to determine her life on her own terms.
True, the USA is far from perfect. When he leaves his advice and gets into his personal opinion, well, the advice is what I was looking for.. Carradine has done a wonderful job of chronicling his time spent working on the film, as well as shedding some light on both his process as an actor and what it's like as an actor to deal with studios such as Miramax (now the Weinstein Company), but the book tends to be a little off balance if only because it's so guarded. An eye opener to a totally different view of the Palestian/Isralie conflict. That essay has special value because it reveals the winning tactics of two very different trial lawyers trying very similar cases: Mark Lanier, a colorful plaintiffs' lawyer who won an early Vioxx trial (although reversed on appeal), and Phil Beck, a talented, low-key, and methodical lawyer who prevailed in a later trial for the defense.. So, that was a really nice surprise!
